Choosing the right seed for your new lawn

(NC)—If you're planning to seed a new lawn this spring, choose your grass seed based on sun exposure as well as the kind of use your yard will get.

Apply seed in the spring when soil temperature reaches 15°C, usually from mid-June.

According to Health Canada's Lawn Establishment Fact Sheet, available online at www.healthylawns.net, lawns in Canada consist mostly of cold weather grasses, which have their main growth periods in the spring and fall.

They include:

• Kentucky bluegrass, which requires more sun than many other grasses.

• Fine fescues, which are more shade tolerant and will do well on sites with only four to six hours of sunlight per day.

• Ryegrass, which has very good tolerance to wear and is suitable for sport or play areas.

Some grass varieties, like tall fescues, fine fescues, and perennial ryegrass may contain beneficial fungi and are more resistant to many common insect pests. Health Canada reminds us that a lawn made up of a variety of grasses can tolerate a range of sun and shade and is less susceptible to pest damage than a lawn of a single grass variety.
